Valen's age
Any guesses?
Just wondering how old people thought Valen was

As there are contradictions in the game itself, one can not be sure.
But considering that he lived on the street with a rogue band for several years after his mother died and was "a young lad" when Grimash't caught him, fought for twenty or more years in the Blood Wars before he met the seer he must be forty years old or even more.
In the game it is said that he searched for the seer for years, another time it was month... but then, when asked about his first love, he says that it was "long time ago", and I don't think he would have forgotten his love in mere months.
So 45 would be even more realistic. Maybe it's even more.
You can only guess, but this was what I calculated after I read the dialog again.

He doesn't know how long he fought in the Blood Wars, that is why he doesn't know exactly how old he is. His age is just one of the mysteries in the game.

I think his age is deliberately left a mystery so the player can fill in the blanks. Therefore, Valen is however old we each say he is, right?
I have him at about 35. I picture him about 8 when he's kidnapped, fought for about 20 years, then had about 5 years between escaping and meeting the PC. He can't be much younger than that, but he could definitely be older. I tend to put him at a younger age because I want to give him as much time as possible with my elf.

I tend to put him at around 35 - 40, too - as everyone else has said, being snatched 'as a young lad' usually implies 8 - 10, then fighting for a good 20 years, plus the years it took him to find the Seer... just seems about right to me.
For some reason (and this may be my own flight of mad fancy rather than actually being true!) I always imagined tieflings would have slightly longer lifespans than regular humans, due to their demonic blood... *shrugs*. I dunno!

They have.
Valen himself says in the game that his demonic blood makes his age hard to guess.

If I remember correctly, tieflings have about the same lifespan as half-elves...

I was always under the impression that the plane-touched age very similarly to the way that elves do, therefore, to slot Valen in at around 40 human years would make him a pre-teen. I'd say he's closer to 100-120 years if I were to make an estimate (that would probably put him in around the mid to late twenties)
Still, I don't think his age really matters. The fact that its so open-ended only makes it easier on a writer who wants to attempt filling in the blanks. Because the age isn't canon, if you're asking from a storyteller's perspective, I really would go with whatever you think fits.

I think I read on a thread elsewhere recently that in terms of Forgotten Realms tieflings are considered to have similar lifespans to humans. Whether they were sticking to that idea for the character is anyone's guess. I think the 30-40 age range feels about right. I can't see him as being say, 50 since he appears to be very physically fit doing all those whirlwind attacks and at some point he is not going to be able to push his body as hard. *tries to imagine him with pipe and slippers and fails*

Concerning the life span I was told by a friend that tieflings can reach an age of about 200 years.
I always wondered, though, what happened after Valen's taint was removed: would he die earlier? He still had his horns and tail, but my character would worry about it more than a bit.

My guess is not about the lifespan but that it might affect his fighting skills. He would still have the benefit of physical fitness and experience but that he might not push himself as hard or as recklessly, given that he wouldn't be as driven in battle by the demonic rage. That might prove to have both advantages and disadvantages depending upon the situation.

I don't think the "taint" referred to his demonic blood, but rather the emotional and psychological hinderances based on his demonic blood and his time in the Blood Wars. If that makes sense... Basically the darkness and rage in him that clouds his vision.
It's probably more likely to affect him in battle only if he thinks it will. I would think he'd actually be safer in battle, if he's relying on instinct and skill rather than instinct, skill and a rage that makes him rush in unthinking.
I think that 40 for an elf would be even younger than a human pre-teen, actually, if only by a little bit. They don't reach adolescence until 50-80, depending on the type of elf, so yeah, 40 would be mighty young for Valen if he aged as an elf did. And that would make the PC's advances...well, kinda creepy.

I don't think it would influence his fighting skills too much. The demonic blood lead to rage, and you don't become a Weaponmaster without gaining control over things like rage. Even if that rage should be gone, he still *is* a skilled Weaponmaster. I suppose he's just not as prone to get into a kind of blood rush.

Somebody recently mentioned, Elves reach physical maturity and are fully grown at around 25, however they are not considered adults in the Elven society until they're about 110 years old.
Also, that is about to change in 4th edition, where they're mature as fast as humans, and then in the bloom of their life, their aging is slowed down so they still live longer as humans, and only slowly show their age (and apparently never as strongly as humans would, though still a bit more than they do now). The lucky bastards.
