The nineties called. They want their golden god back.
So I just finished marathoning the whole series of Great Teacher Onizuka, and I now have six volumes of the original manga series sitting under my bed. Needless to say, I'm enamored At the beginning of the series the animation was kinda sub-par, but that smoothed out later on--when they got more revenue, I guess.
And GOOD GOD you must avoid the English dub! I hate it when nerds are all like "ALL dubs EVER are irredeemably bad," but man oh man, it's like the translating team was consciously trying to butcher the show. Onizuka's voice was passable--it sounded like him and all--but everyone else? Blehh. Just watch the subtitled version.
Oh--and am I weird for thinking that Uchiyamada (cranky bald guy) isn't so bad toward the end? It's like he goes from being a stuck-up jerk to being downtrodden... and then suddenly starts remembering how fun it was to be a teacher toward the last few episodes.
And of course, Onizuka is more or less the hottest thing ever. No contest.
Now, let's discuss! Who else has seen/read this series?
... a-anybody?

Unfortunately, I've only seen the first episode. Yes, I know I need to see it.
You should check out the live action. I haven't seen it, but I've heard its good.

Yeah, I saw some screenshots of it. Not a bad-lookin' actor, but he doesn't look a thing like Onizuka to me!

I'm watching this anime at the moment! Onizuka is great. Supremely hot, yet so funny.
Unfortunately I've had to resort to downloading it, as I've had no luck finding a region 2 version of the DVDs. So it's taking me a while to get through all the episodes. I'm not very far in yet, but I think it's gonna be a favourite.
