xxxHolic thoughts and review
newest series from CLAMP
And CLAMP did make an xxxHolic (pronounced simply Holic) anime series. And, it was good.
Or at least, that's my first impression of it. I haven't read the manga, but I have heard good things about it. And, I like what I see so far.
For a review with pictures, head over to my livejournal where I have basically the same thing, but with images! I kept the pictures as links here, however, just to be equal, its not some trick to get people on my livejournal. But, they are mostly embedded and formatted there instead of hyperlinked. But, on with xxxHolic!
Yuuko is a woman who runs a business of granting wishes, or in actuality needs, that people have. Of the supernatural variety. But, there's always a price. If you've seen Tsubasa Chronicle, then you know her; she's the one who helped the main characters near the beginning by allowing them to travel in search of Sakura's feathers, taking something of great value from all of them in the process. xxxHolic is about her and her business.
The first thing anyone who sees this will notice is the character design. Lots of people don't like it. I think it has style. Serious style. But maybe I'm biased because the opening theme is so freaking awesome. As you can see to the right is the main character, Watanuki Kimihiro. It's even more stylistic than the Tsubasa designs. He's too lanky, his arms are way too long, and his hands are way too big. And, I love it. But, that might just be me. I'm a writing critic, not an art critic.
And, I do like the story. But, more on that later. Watanuki-san is a high school student with a problem. Ghosts seem to follow him around and bother him all the time. So, in order to get rid of this problem, Yuuko grants his wish, to not be bothered by them anymore. In return is his payment. No, not his soul. He has to work for her until debts are repayed. And, thus a series is formed. He seems to be your typical anime high schooler. He's the "normal guy" (if one can call someone who sees ghosts normal) caught up in this crazy shop.
That brings me to Yuuko. She's hot. And, not in that normal big breasted anime character way. She's mysterious and there's something deeper about her. She helps people, but it doesn't seem like she really cares about them, or maybe she does and its just in a way that is deeper than wanting to help them, she wants to help them help themselves more than anything else. The show is called xxxHolic for a reason. People have problems with things, things they bring upon themselves, and she helps them to bring and end to these problems, the xxx being fill in the blank here.
Of course, what show would be complete without the lolis... er... I mean the strange little helpers? Moro and Maru are interesting girls, definitely more than they appear to be. Or maybe not. Who knows! I don't know exactly what to say about them. They mostly repeat what other people say, talk in unison, and often do both at once. Mostly comedy relief I guess, although that's a job for Mokona most of the time. I like them, though, and not in that way! Like most of the show, its their strangeness that I enjoy.
Lastly, is Mokona, who I just mentioned. If you've seen Tsubasa (which I do recommend) you know Mokona. This is his brother, or sister, or whatever. A cute little marketable character who is very innocent and makes you smile. Or at least me.
So, overall impressions of the series? It seems promising. I like the style, by which I mean more than the designs, but that's part of it. It's different, and in a good way. Yuuko is very cool. The shop is mysterious. The characters interact in fun ways. It's interesting. I just hope that it can keep this up throughout the 26 episodes. It's going to have to move somewhere and I'm not sure where its moving.
Of course, I've only seen the first two episodes, so in true CLAMP fashion, it will most likely deliver on that end. There seem to be unintroduced main characters, judging by the intro, and I can't remember a CLAMP I didn't like. Really, the review could have been "It's CLAMP." But, that sounds so dry and uninteresting. Plus, I like pictures! I'm definitely looking forward to watching this one every week. I like the premise of the show, and the manga, as I hear, is very popular. I will definitely recommend this one.
Fansubs of xxxHolic can be obtained at animesuki and downloaded with bittorrent.

I highly recommend Angelic Layer. Not that I don't get weird looks when I tell people that I like a show about girls dressing up dolls who then send them to fight each other in a spectator sport. But, darn it, I do! I really do!
Tsubasa Chronicle should be coming out in R1 soon. It's pretty average, your typical shounen serial, but I enjoyed it.
Mostly I think Yuuko is just sexy. ^_^; No no, its good, its good. ^^;
