Has anyone else been following this? Pillars of Eternity
Its made by Obsidian and its the result of a Kickstarter campaign that happened a couple years back. It apparently saved the company from shutting down completely. Its set in an original world that draws inspiration from some of my favorites. Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale and though I haven't played it Planescape Torment influences it as well. It came out today and I have it downloading at the moment so we will see how it is once I get to playing. The reviews I've seen so far are good and from what I've read it seems to be a decent game. It doesn't have shiny graphics instead it focuses on choices roleplay and dialog so it kind of had me at hello. It doesn't have romance from what I've read but that might be added by modders later and there is already an expansion planned for it too so maybe we still have some hope for romance? But the promise of roleplay and a good story allows me to ignore the lack of romance at the moment. Here is hoping the combat isn't crazy tedious like DAI was for me.
If anyone else is playing it or wants to check it out you can post your thoughts and opinions here if you like.

Not planning on getting it myself for a long while, but curious how it turns out. Crossing my fingers for those who have been waiting that it's good.

Ohhh yes! I backed it on Kickstarter to get lots of physical goodies, so they should be arriving in a few weeks <3 Didn't know that it saved them from shutting down, augh that would have been terrible. Obsidian is probably one of my favourite companies, really glad that I backed it now.
I've probably got an email buried somewhere with a code to redeem for it, though I can't guarantee that I'll have time to play it. I'll certainly take a look though. From what I've heard it might be a bit different from the beta version of it I tried a while ago.

Yes from what I read Obsidian was almost shut down. This is what I found, it explains a little bit about what happened. But thankfully they should be safe now. I'm also very glad that they used Kickstarter and actually asked their fans what they wanted to see. That's a big step up from most companies and it proves you can still make money and make decent quality games that are what people want. The Sims has gone way downhill lately because EA doesn't think fans will stop buying their games even if their products are terrible. It upsets me. Anyway I'm still downloading POE, its like 6GBs and I bought it on GOG. I'm at 4GBs so far so maybe late tomorrow if all goes well I can let you guys know how it goes.
EDIT
Okay my internet is slow but its trudging along rather well at the moment. I'm at the tail end of 5BGs now so I'm close. I would estimate I will be able to install and play early this evening or maybe a little earlier if all goes well. Anyway I have been researching the games options in character creation and how they handle alignment and such. The Disposition system is interesting and I think alignment is based completely on that? If that's true then your in game choices truly determine how things play out! I have a couple characters in mind already, three total so far and I think I may need help deciding which to go with first...I'm so eager to try them all!
I wish I could find a good artist to do portraits of two of these characters like the one I have for my main character Brei. She is also my avatar by the way. Anyway here are my basic outlines for those three characters.
Name: Synthia Gender: Female Race: Human Class: Rogue or Bard Personality Traits: Cruel, Deceptive, and Stoic, with a touch of Clever. Notes: Synthia is somewhat tricky, she craves power above all and she doesn't care who she has to harm to get it. She will lie with ease and she enjoys tricks and deceiving others. Yet she also maintains a slight detachment from other people and their plights. While she doesn't really care about people at all outside her circle of allies she can be rather sassy and playful at times, her cruelty allowing for a rather wicked sense of humor. If its an option in game her background will be nobility of some kind.
Name: Yasriel Gender: Male Race: Elf Class: Ranger or Druid Personality Traits: Benevolent, Diplomatic, and Honest. Notes: Yasriel is a nice guy overall. He tries hard to make everyone happy at times running himself in circles just to solve an issue the best way he can. A compassionate being at heart he doesn't care if he makes a difference as long as he does his best to be helpful to others. He prefers talking to violence and despises having to lie to people. He tends to say his thoughts aloud too making him a rather odd but honest diplomat. He is also exceptionally curious and likes to meddle, for the greater good of course. Yas is going to be a kind hearted wood elf who traveled far from his home out of curiosity and a desire to see the world and help people.
Name: Brei Gender: Female Race: Death Godlike (With a Pale Elf mother) Class: Cipher or Wizard Personality: Clever, Honest, and Passionate with a bit of Cruel and Aggressive. Notes: Brei is one of my main Original Characters and she has been recycled and made for different themes several times. But this incarnation is as close to the original idea for her background as I've ever come in a game. With a death god for a father and an elf for a mother she feels quite misunderstood and very much like an outcast. She covers her loneliness with sarcasm and her passionate drive to survive and make something of herself. She can be quite cruel to those who wrong her but unless provoked she just minds her own business. She tends to be quite direct, charging forward and being bluntly honest about her opinion and nature. She knows she isn't good but she doesn't feel like she is outright evil either...she hangs somewhere in the middle of that spectrum.
If anyone else is planning out their playthroughs please share them if you like. I'm curious about what others will play for this game.

Sorry for the double post but my download just finished! Installing it now and I will start it up and play after dinner. I'm probably going to go with my concepts for Synthia or Yasriel for that first playthrough. Expect a few comments to follow tonight or tomorrow and wish me luck!

I managed to get it downloaded yesterday and played a littlleee bit. As in, just barely reached the second area map XD So I've hardly even scratched the surface of the game. It seems pretty easy to handle and nicely familiar in how things work so far though. Dialogue-wise anyway. So far I've just bashed things to death in combat Also only recalled the bonus pets today. My characters... I have one that I'm playing the game with (the first), and another that popped up and decided to co-exist with the other character. Name: Linea Gender: Female Race: Nature Godlike (elf) Class: Druid (may change) From: The White that Wends. Background: Merchant. Personality: She has the gift of the gab and can sell virtually anything to anyone if given enough time. She primarily deals in stolen goods, hard to find items and smuggling. Notes: Being from a place of cold and snow I want her appearance to reflect that a bit, so her faun-like ears at least will be white and I'll see if I can poke at a few other bits. She was also likely tossed out by the pale elf community she was born into, until a druid or two may have taken her in and raised her. Although she lived in a harsh environment, she's learned to use her voice to defend herself more than a weapon. She quickly overcomes the mistrust of others with her friendly, confident manner, and of course whatever she's trying to sell them. Name: Gender: Male Race: Death Godlike (human) Class: Priest? From: Background: Personality: He makes it his duty to guide the dying towards death as peacefully as possible. He has a natural aura that tends to hasten death in those who are weak and dying, so he tries to make use of this. He is compassionate but doesn't mind letting Linea using unclaimed bodies to hide goods as the body is merely a shell, the soul is what matters. Notes: He records every person that he has helped towards death in a book with a headshot sketch of them. He cannot draw anything living, whenever he tries they still end up looking like a corpse. People view him with fear and some respect for the work he does.

It will be the next game I buy. I've been wanting it for awhile as I love these types of games. It looks really fun. >.> Alas someday I'll have it.

Finally, I am playing it now! I love it so far - especially love the oldschool vibe. But why, why there is no romance? Eder and Aloth - anytime! Can't wait for the modders to intervene. Anybody is working on this? Do you guys know something about it?

It looks like a cool game, I'll definitely get it sometime. But I still need to get Dragon Age. Yes, yes, I know I'm behind on the bandwagon so I'm well aware of that. Hope to get both someday.

A friend of mine was so kind to hand me her extra copy. I really should give her something back because the game is good stuff. I'm actually okay with not having romances in the game, building more a bond of fraternity with the other teammates. The art...oh god the art, it's GORGEOUS! I like to have back the long, detailed and well written description in the dialogue box. So far I've started restoring some of the Keep and found the dwarf hunter (darn, I can't recall the name, but she's awesome and adorable) and recruited Grieving Mother. My watcher is a nature Godlike druid called Verbena and she turn into a bear!

I finished playing it about a month ago. I liked it, although it didn't satisfy my expectations (they were quite high, though).
I enjoyed the oldschool vibe it has, but I hoped for a game similar to Baldur's Gate 2 and - at least to me - it felt more like the first one. I think it's because of how they decided to handle the areas in game - some of the wilderness felt pretty empty and there were times when I had to stroll through one screen just to reach another one. BG2 felt much more focused and I felt Pillars could be a better game if they took the BG2 approach. The side quests were kind of meh at times, too. Not exactly "fetch-quest" tier, but some required too much running back and forth. I also found the balance between fighting and just reading dialogues to be kinda off, too - sometimes there was too much of one thing and not enough of the other.
Having said that, I liked the combat system a lot - it felt smooth and responsive. The writing was good, too, and I loved reading Grieving Mother's dialogues. The game's world was quite interesting and well designed - the way they presented it during the first few hours could've been better, though. I felt a bit lost with all the information they decided to throw at the player right off the bat, lol. But honestly, Obsidian did a really good job considering this is their return to the genre after quite some time and if they decide to make PoE II I'll definitely back it.
And of course I was disappointed there was no Eder or Aloth romance. I hope some kind modding soul delivers on that front someday! They're so interesting. I'd love to know more about them. That and um, Aloth's... Condition would make for quite a romance indeed.
I haven't played the first expansion yet. Any thoughts on it?
