I'm curious, for those of you that have played Dragon Age, what was your favorite combination of party members to play with? And why, if you had a particular reason for that team?
These are mine, based on my Mage-Warden and Mage-Hawke.
Dragon Age: Origins - Alistair and Zevran, with the third slot rotating between Morrigan (50%), Dog (20%), Wynne (20%), and Leliana (10%).
I kept Alistair because he was the only one of the warriors who I could have in the party and not need to micromanage after setting up tactics. At the same time, I had an easy time playing as him if I felt the need to, unlike the other warriors. Zevran, because, well... I was romancing him, so it seemed imperative to keep him nearby. Plus, backstabs. Though I wasn't very happy to find that when he joins the party, he cannot, in fact, pick locks. Now, for the rotating third slot. When I brought Morrigan along for offensive casting, I would lean towards playing support, which is what I did the majority of the time. With Wynne as support, I was more offensive, and with Leliana or Dog as side rogue or warrior, I struck a balance between the two.
Awakening - Nathaniel, Anders, and Oghren.
There isn't much reason for using these three over the others. They were simply the first of their respective classes that were recruited. I never tried to deviate from these three, and I never finished the game either, so I'll probably try something else on my next playthrough.
Dragon Age 2 - Fenris, Varric, and an even rotation between Isabela, Aveline, and Anders.
I chose Fenris as my main warrior because, frankly, the elf's a real terror in combat (she says, recalling how her Hawke was practically shredded by him during the Night Terrors quest). There's also the same reasons I chose Alistair: I can set his tactics and almost never have to take control of him. Even then, playing as him in combat was really fun for me; I found myself fighting as him almost as much as I fought as Hawke. Also, I romanced him, so there was the need I felt to keep with nearby. I felt compelled to bring Varric along for two reasons. From a roleplaying standpoint, it makes sense for him to be present for as much of Hawke's story are possible, since he is the one telling said story. From a more practical point of view, I needed a good rogue. Seeing that at one point, when confronted with a locked chest, Varric was the only one able to open it out of the three rogues available, the choice was obvious. For the third rotating slot, who I place there depends on what kind of fight I'm anticipating. If I'm expecting a few of the hardier types of enemies, I'll take Aveline for her tankiness and take care of any needed healing myself. If I expect a series of small skirmishes with relatively weak enemies, I'll bring Isabela for her dexterity and backstabbing, while I dish out some damage myself, or do some healing if it's needed. If there's a boss fight, I'm almost always take Anders and leave most of the healing to him, while I deal as much damage as I can, and heal if someone's health drops dangerously low while he's on cooldown.
