A gaming forum without a Skyrim thread? Can't have it. Who else is still playing Skyrim to this day? I've just started a new walkthrough with my Altmer for the Legendary Edition. It has Dawnguard, Hearthfire and Dragonborn in it. Has anyone tried the build your house thing? How in depth do they actually go with raising children? I've never actually finished the main story of Skyrim because the game is just too friggin long and I always get caught up in the city quests and guild quests and whatnot. I intend to complete it on this walkthrough. Another thing I can't wrap my mind around it completely is the marriage thing. Whom do you guys usually go for? Because we have like 50 romance options, but let's be honest, most of them are ugly or you barely get to interact with them. Farkas and Vilkas are the most obvious options, but I've decided they're too mainstream for me. I do like Argis the Bulwark next, but he barely has a few dialogue options. I wish they gave us 5 romance options, but with flesh on them. Anyway, after so much time, this game hasn't lost its appeal for me. Really amazing stuff.

I don't think I'll ever not be in love with Skyrim. Sometimes I get bored with it, but I always come back. I like being able to build my own house, but I wish it was more in depth (I think there's a mod for that?) From what I remember, it's just getting the materials for what type of house you want to build and then building it, rather than getting to come up with different layouts and whatnot. Still, I like gathering the materials. Never adopted any children, so I can't speak for that, but I do know you can find them toys/clothes in some places, and your spouse acknowledges them. In terms of who I marry... it's hard for me to say, because I hardly ever play without Interesting NPCs installed, and there's 15 marriage candidates (and a couple tiny romances) there. If I can mention mods for vanilla characters, I tend to lean towards Brynjolf with Friendly Brynjolf installed. I know you meant vanilla game, but I'm horribly boring and usually go for the typical Farkas/Vilkas mix, though Ghorbash occasionally pops in to say hello.

I picked up Skyrim last year and have been playing it on and off for some months. Being a committed Bioware-style story-based game aficionado who put down Morrowind in boredom and disgust after a few hours, I found myself enjoying it more than I expected. It's huge, and I still feel like I've only scratched the surface on some of the quests. The marriage design is archetypal of how Bethesda's sandbox style differs from the more linear and plot-driven approach that's more characteristic of Bioware games. The Bethesda format is to put an enormous amount of shallowly drawn material with a set pattern that can be more easily driven by algorithms. That's the tradeoff: there's a huge amount to explore, but when you test its depth what you find starts coming across like a movie set of building facades. In a plot-driven game the material is a lot less expansive, but when you dig into what is there there's much more substance to it. I thought Skyrim pulled off the sandbox execution with a lot of appeal despite that. As far as the marriage system goes, though, I thought it was really awful. There were no romances I could see -- only bloodless, utilitarian pairings. I went to the Skyrim modding community for a solution and installed the Vilja companion mod. I really like it, and it provides everything that the Bethesda style "marriage bots" don't: an endearing companion with interesting dialogue and quests. As of the mod update last fall, you can also marry her (which I did ). Unfortunately I haven't heard of a male romance mod for Skyrim that's nearly as well done as hers. As for homes and family: I've built all three of the homesteads and adopted two of the homeless girls from the cities. The interactions are mostly formula, but they create a nice comfortable ambiance to return home to after a long day of adventuring.

Ah, Skyrim. According to Steam, I've played it for over 300 hours, which is a lot for me, given that it's a single player game. When I play, I mostly come back to my first character, my good old Argonian magic ninja lizard. My only other character is a Breton warrior turned vampire. I've played through the civil war and Dragon storyline with my Argonian, with the Breton I've completely ignored the civil war and only advanced the Dragon story... which was a good choice, because only the Breton got to see the quest where Jarl Ulfric and General Tullius negotiate the temporary peace treaty. With the lizard, I had already stomped the Stormcloaks enough to not need any of the sort. And of course I've built a house! I picked Heljarchen Hall first, the one south of Dawnstar and probably in the harshest weather/place of all three houses. I've never adopted children or married, though... after all, there are no lizards like me. There's only me. And while Skyrim is probably not so much known for its elaborate writing, I found General Tullius and Jarl Ulfric to be way, WAY better antagonists than, say, Meredith and Orsino in DA2. Tullius and Ulfric both think they are doing the best for the country, and both had points found myself agreeing with. Both also had their flaws. I mostly ignored the civil war with my Breton because I just couldn't decide whom I wanted to join and because I knew that neither side was led by a bad person, so I'd rather not harm either of them. And that says something about how real that entire world feels to me.

I installed Friendly Brynjolf in the next 5 minutes since reading your post. I was a bit skeptical about Interesting NPCs because I usually stay away from mods that modify the game to a larger extent than a tweak here and there, but it seems they've done a really profi job and there's like a mini-studio working on this mod, so I'm downloading it now as we speak. Can't harm to have a few more followers, though as I said. FRIENDLY BRYNJOLF.

But the end result is so pleasing you almost forget you're basically a lonely dude with a few talking brooms for company.

Ok, so what you're saying is that if you delay picking a side long enough, there will be a debate between the two sides that you will not get to see otherwise? And I'm a vampire fan through and through, yet in Skyrim I'll probably go for the Dawnguard. It just seems to make more sense for the moral profile of my Altmer.

Ok, so what you're saying is that if you delay picking a side long enough, there will be a debate between the two sides that you will not get to see otherwise? You probably don't need to completely delay picking your side, the civil war just needs to be still going. There is a point in the Dragon plot where an NPC basically tells you "we can't do this while there's a war going on" if the civil war parties are still at each other's throats. If you have already resolved the civil war at that point, that dialogue and the resulting negotiation quest will not happen.

I wasn't in a hurry to deal with the stick fight anyway. I've got much more important things to do! Like exploring the Interesting NPCs mod! Thank you so much, Auddi, for suggesting it. I went straight after Rumarin (cause my Altmer needed a suitable companion) and 5 minutes into the conversation, I'm having tears in my eyes. Hilarious writing and not that bad voice acting either! Good Lord, Skyrim followers with actual interesting dialogue! I won't know what to do with myself.

A Bishop (of NWN2 fame) romance mod for Skyrim is supposedly releasing this month, but I can't find any info on it other than the author's name and some screenshots on deviantart. Anyone heard of this?
I have no idea how Bishop is supposed to be transported to Skyrim, but I'll try anything that makes that game a bit more deep.

You don't understand how much I'd LOVE to see that. He cracks me up in NWN2. I love Skyrim and have many mods for it, mostly Body and Clothing/Armor mods but a few naughty ones mixed in.

I have been plodding along on Skyrim adding Mods of course because, well that it just what I do. I have been watching the Progress of the Skyrim romance mod. I saw it was released and logged in in to mention it. You beat me to it . Just kidding I would never be upset at such. I will try to download though and let y'all know what I think though. The original blog was skyrimromance.com/ and it is of course now on Nexus. Lets give a round of applause for another female modder.

I don't know if that's the mod you were looking at but it looks like it will be good all the same. I am only curious how can you maintain a relationship with Bishop and still enjoy all the attention the other men give you;) Basically, how the romance conflicts are handled?
