I don't know much about the game except:
-the pc's name is Revan, male or female -one of the romance-able NPC's is voiced by the same guy who voiced Kaidan and may or may not be whiny -you can follow the jedi or sith path
That's pretty much it....I haven't actually started playing yet but I loaded up the character creator last night before going to bed. I was somewhat surprised to see stats and skill choices pretty much identical to the D&D/NWN format. Didn't actually create a character, was too tired to make decent choices, but I'm looking forward to playing once I get done with my current DA run.
Some folks here have played this already, yes? Any advice on making a character? No spoilers please....I prefer to epic fail on my own.

Ok, so now that I've started the game I know I've been spoiled as to one of the major plot points. Oops.
I'm not very far in but I'm really liking it so far. I first rolled a soldier but got irritated when I couldn't pass a persuade check so I switched over to scoundrel and maxed out the skill. Why, yes, Mr. Sith dude, I'd love to go to a party where you pass out before saying two words to me. But thanks for the nice uni....I'll put it to good use! For squaddies, I only have Carth so far. Yes, I know he's got Kaidan's voice but he really more reminds me of Alistair based on his mannerisms and how he stumbles over his words. My scoundrel is really enjoying getting under his skin. Plus, he is kinda cute. No idea when anyone else is gonna join us, though I think I have met two of them. I'm pretty sure there's supposed to be another romance option for female characters but if he doesn't show up soon it might be too late.

Go scoundrels! The rogues of the galaxy! Sadly I can't give you any combat tricks... I'm pretty sure that Carth is the only male romance in Kotor. I've never managed to finish his romance, but I did like the parts I saw. There might or might not be a romance with another lady companion. I've never been able to trigger it (never really been interested either) but it might be out there. If you are interested. Oh and: Light side or dark side?

There was originally a Lesbian Romance option with a companion you get on Dantooine but they cut it down to near nothing due to whatever reasons. I don't want to say her name for possible spoilers but I do believe there is a mod out there that restores the cut dialogue from that romance.
Carth is the only male romance option available. The Romances aren't very fleshed out and kinda feel like afterthoughts which is sad to me in a game that did everything else so right.

Carth is really adorable, despire his issues (why Bioware male romance interests must always have a complicated family history? You've got to be careful to finish all the available conversations before moving to a next map though. There's also a mini-mod somewhere that allows you to kiss him in the end, when the romance is completed. Also - Carth is very distrustful (to put it mildly) of the dark side:)

Light side. I have trouble playing evil and cruel. Rude and annoyed I can do, but not really evil. In my current DA2 game, I had to force myself to boot Keran from the Templars just so I can get the last stinkin' achievement I'm missing. Another reason I started KOTOR now instead of waiting until I was done with DA....I need a break from aggressive, Templar-siding Hawke.

So, um, am I supposed to like Bastila? Because, from the 2 or 3 convo's I've had with her so far, she seems like an uppity, know-it-all bee-atch who doesn't lie very well. She lost her lightsaber?! Uh huh, and I'm the queen of Antiva.

Basically, she's a proud, passionate person put in the role of the humble, calm Jedi. She's put a lot of effort from keeping those two sides from clashing, so she's probably irritated to see you handling this like a professional. When you find her she's had a major setback. She lost the Endar Spire and almost all the soldiers within. When she crashes on Taris she's probably knocked out and also pretty drained from the battle meditation. Looters capture her, bind her and put her in a cage, to be sold at the Black Market. They probably found her saber and sold it to the highest bidder. I mean, they removed the Jedi Robes she was wearing, why would they not take her weapons? In the end she's saved by some grunt, who then proceeds to tell her what to do with the rest of her troops. And the troops agree with the grunt, over the battle hardened Jedi. I'd be pretty pissed too. Also, it seems that your whole goal has basically been to find her, so she could help you proceed, but when she's there she's demoted from a leader to a follower. There are probably some "Whats?!" floating around in her skull. But like with most annoying girls in films you'll find out that she had a somewhat hard life and has learned to guard herself off from emotions. (And she needs to lettigo). She'll probably grow on you a bit if get into space and visit some more planets. At least, that's what happened to me.

I finished my first game and managed to not complete the Carth romance....sigh. Stupid secret trigger things. And yeah, the dead wife/past love for a male romance is getting reeeeeealllly old. Now I don't know if I want to start a new game, or just pick up from a current save and go from there. I missed out on a lot of stuff, mostly the companion side quests because I took Carth with me pretty much everywhere for all the good it did me. As for Bastila, I never got to where I liked her much (too preachy, but after what happened I think maybe she was more trying to convince herself than the pc) and wasn't really sad to see her disappear for a while or end up the way she did. I wonder....is she any less b----y to a male pc?

I ended up re-playing the latter half of my first game and then did a full playthrough with a second character (scout). Did a lot of the things I missed the first time around....all companion quests (even Juhani's which took forever to trigger!) and the assassinations. My scout was a bit more grey in how she reacted to things, but still ended up being a goody-goody in the end. I installed a bunch of mods for additional content/dialogue, but I think some of them overlapped and may have cancelled each other out. Some final thoughts on the companions:
Carth - Definitely adorable. I used the "kiss at the end" mod which, even though it hardly changes anything, changes things enough to make it feel like you actually have a romance going. I also really liked the "reveal" dialogue much better after having all conversations with him done by then. I really felt for the poor guy. I never did think he was whiny though. Maybe just....exasperating? Teasing him was way fun too.
Jolee - Favorite non-romanceable npc. He has a great backstory which I was determined to hear all of in my second game. He reminded me of Book from Firefly. I also really liked his voice actor. The galaxy needs more practical Jedi like him.
HK-47 - OMG....so freaking hilarious! I laughed so hard at hearing the histories of his previous owners and how they all ended up dead. I made sure my repair skill was high enough that I would get them all before he auto-remembered who he was.
Juhani - I like her story but I'd like it better if her quest didn't take 9 years to trigger so you could actually get to all of her story (I didn't hear all of it, I don't think, even though the slaver dirtbag finally showed up). Also, the accent got old after a while....she sounded like Jaheira! Plus the constant hand-holding got a little tiresome (same for Bastila).
Mission - eh...she's ok but nothing special. I liked one of her early banters with Bastila though, where she mysteriously ends up on her keister.
Canderous - lots of potential here. I liked him once I got to know him. He'd make a good romance for a dark-side leaning pc. I didn't let him kill his former soldier friend though.
Zaalbar - Adorable, for a walking carpet.
T3-M4 - Also adorable, minus the carpet part.
Bastila - I leave her for last since I never really did end up liking her. The whole "redeem" angle for a male pc is nice, but I can't even imagine what a dark side Revan would want with her. She's too weak-willed to be a decent Sith Lord. In my headcanon I see Darth Revan basically laughing at her incompetence and mistaken belief in her own importance. Right before s/he kills her, of course.
Now on to KOTOR II, which I know even less about than the first one before I played it. From what I've read so far, opinions vary on which one people like better....some like 1 better, some like 2 better. I guess I will know soon enough.

Ohh, I wanted to reply to this when you first posted, but didn't want to give away the fact that you knowing the PC was Revan was a spoiler itself Also I last played it yeaarrs ago, so I don't really remember much in the way of useful details about it. I couldn't stand Bastilla either, she just seemed like another Aribeth to me (ie Biowares favourite female NPC in whatever current game you're playing who sometimes tries to take over the plot). Carth, well there are the trust issues, which are actually a little similar to Valen... (and of course the dead spouse, how many times have male LIs had dead women in their lives now Bioware?)But what I really liked was the banter back and forth that the PC could have with him, the way you could exchange insults without anyone getting all hurt about it (ah, the days before the dreaded influence losses...) As for Kotor 2... I'm one of the people that love it despite its unfinished state <3 So of course I'm going to say you should try it There's also a finished restoration mod that fixes the aforementioned unfinished state of things. I finished it before the mod was finished and still liked it. Haven't found the time to try the mod yet but I've heard good things about it

Ohh, I wanted to reply to this when you first posted, but didn't want to give away the fact that you knowing the PC was Revan was a spoiler itself Yeah, that was kind of a big one.
The whole premise reminded me of a B5 episode where a serial killer was mind-wiped and programmed with a new personality (a sentence of "death of personality" in the show's legal jargon). Many years later family members of the victims hired an alien telepath to break down the mind-wipe so he'd remember who he really was before they killed him in revenge. Of course, one of the big themes of the episode was how can a person seek forgiveness/redemption when they don't remember what they need to be forgiven/redeemed for? I definitely felt that way about the pc....they call it a redemption at the end, but is it really? The original person is still gone, whether they are dead or mind-wiped. Is it really merciful to do the latter? What about all of Revan's pre-fall memories? Parents, childhood, becoming a Jedi the first time. Those are also gone. Is that justice?
But....Carth....so yeah, I guess it's a decent trade-off.

Here's a link to The Sith Lords Restored Content Mod: deadlystream.com/forum/files/file/398-tslrcm-183/It's truly essential if you want a complete game. Sadly, TSL was rushed out in an unfinished state and these guys have been able to salvage and restore most of the cut content and trust me, it's A LOT of stuff. I highly recommend it! Even on a first playthrough because they only added what was intended to be in the final game in the first place.

First time through I did without and had a few WTF moments when I had no clue what was going on, or why. Hated the final mission where you are all alone. Why do they force the pc to fight the end baddie by themselves? That's why we have a crew, darn it! Speaking of crew, am I the only person whose favorite companion is T3? I just want to give that little guy a hug. Ooh, and I got my Carth cameo this time too (Admiral?!). First game I accidentally picked the wrong history for Revan....whoopsie!....so whenever anyone talked about recent events I kept wondering, when the heck did that happen?? Sigh....stupid dialogue options.
