Valen romance discussion
What makes him fall for a woman?

Should we move this conversation to a new thread? We're so far off topic now.
Yep. Here you are.
I still can't imagine Valen with a half-orc, gnome or dwarf...
If you have a high charisma, it would be easier, but most important are the answers you give during the romance talks.
Depending on your answers, a special variable will increase or decrease.
That's all.
If the value of the variable is high enough, Valen will confess his love.

Sorry to put you on the spot, Tari, but I'm curious as to why you think that?

I completely agree with you, Kindred. I think the whole issue with gnomes, half-orcs and dwarves is simply their stereotypes. They're not often portrayed as very personable creatures, and I think I have read somewhere that dwarves and gnomes cannot procreate with other races but their own, but I don't think that would be a problem.
When I think charisma score I don't necessarily think beauty. I think likeability, charm, people-skills and while a comely appearance does play a factor in these things, it's not a necessary part of the package. I've known some unfortunate looking people who were capable of being the life of the party, and whom people would follow off a cliff if they could just because these people possessed incredibly captivating personalities.
Where charisma is concerned, of course, that goes without saying.
Now, that isn't to say that Valen isn't a lusty young male who can appreciate a pretty face or other feminine, ahem, assets, but where love is concerned, I think he'll go for the kinder, more modest looking gal than the sexy bitch.
And I think that goes for the majority of guys. Sure, every person would like a good looking partner or spouse to hang off their shoulder or have a tumble with under the covers, but I think in the long run, it's the personality that counts.

I'm not sure...
For Valen, good looks definitely are less important than the woman's personality.
Maybe, it's because HE is so hot and I think he just deserves a pretty woman?
Or is it my writing exercises (I tried to write a love scene with him and an ugly woman, didn't work)?
Concerning gnomes, dwarves or halflings I had the same discussion with Cy some time ago, her opinion was that it's Bioware's fault: in his dialog there is no line like "Valen bends down to kiss you upon the lips..."
I just can't imagine him with my half-orc bard or my dwarven cleric... even though that might be interesting.
Does this answer your question?

What's difficult about imagining Valen with a dwarf, for me, is the logistics of having a love affair with someone of a smaller stature. Sure, it could happen - but I have a hard time imagining it... how everything would work, that is.

I totally agree, it would just be weird to see him with a half-orc, or a dwarf, just for size issues alone... i don't even know if it could work...

I had a little look in the character creation screen for HOTU. Dwarves 4 1/2 feet tall, gnomes 3-31/2 feet tall, halflings 3ft - dwarves I might be able to just about suspend my belief over, but with the other two I think we're talking about a lot of ingenuity needed and quite possibly an Enlange Person spell. I may be being sizeist here but the whole idea just gives me the shudders (and not in a good way).

Actually, there are people in RL with that stature who not only marry, but have children with mates of normal height. It's quite within the realms of possibility.

If memory serves, the PC's charisma only influences his reaction when she mentions something about her 'good looks and charm'. I'm pretty sure there is no minimum CHA score required for the romance branch of his confession in Cania.
I did play through with a halfling once, though (I'd have played a half-orc, but their models in NWN just look so incredibly stupid). I just played it up as a more platonic love. After all, to imply that your PC wants to tear his clothes off is completely optional.

Yes, you're right, I wasn't really thinking about that and I hope I haven't offended anyone with that comment. I still don't find it the most likely of scenarios for a pairing, nonetheless.

I also have a difficult time imagining Valen cuddling a half-orc or a dwarf.
*Imagines Valen with a half-orcish lady with tusks in a very romantic situation*
But on the other hand he is a bit naïve… or doesn’t know much of the races in Toril, as one discovers in the talks.
And love is blind, and I don’t mean that in a bad way. When someone loves another the physical appearance doesn’t matter.
I think that races should play a role in dialogs, sure it might be a lot more work but it is many times the details that capture you and makes a game good.
I know a couple where the man is a dwarf(he proudly calls himself that) and the woman is normal. They are hilarious and loves it when people wonder how everything works. But that is more suitable in the M section.

...and maybe it's just his sheer loneliness? Sorry to point that out, but sometimes people do fall in love just because they feel utterly lonely and want to feel closeness. Valen isn't what I would call emotionally stable and rather naive when it comes to feelings. PC is one of those few that show some warm feelings towards him, be it friendship or camardery.

I've stumbled upon this thread now...and I'm wondering if Shantua,my half-orc hunter, would be with Valen. And now I imagine them in a hut, by the fire, cuddling and bear hugging on a bear fur.Oh god.
I think there are many elven/half-elven/human pc paired with Valen because he's a handsome man and people hate to see a handsome guy with an ugly girl, and viceversa.Usually elvenkind and humankind are more appeling and preferred than other races.I guess it's normal...and quite boring.
The character I rolled in HotU was an half-elf ranger(ok,I'm guilty for playing an half-elf) that I played in a D&D session. She's not very femenine(short hair, dressed)yet kinda cute, quiet, loves simple pleasures that life can give(a good plate of food, some good spirit to drink or tobacco to smoke) and the beauty of nature. When I'll have some time I should try to write her background, and maybe a story...too bad English is not my first language, I'd post it here.
