Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
Genre: Cute Girls doing Bad Things
And not cute or naughty Bad Things, but actual Bad Things! (maybe) It's up in the air what's going on, which is what I like so much about it. It's a horror mystery type anime with very very cute characters. And even though they're so cute, the opening scene is someone beating two people to death with a bat. *fanboys out* ^____^
I have to make a post about this series, because Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is now my second favorite series of this season (after NANA). The red "Na" is part of the title, by the way, too bad I couldn't make it red in the subject, I feel dirty not making it red.
It was originally a doujinshi visual novel in Japan released in serialized form, with each new chapter seeming like a separate entity but giving clues into previous chapters. So, the readers try to figure out what's going on as more and more information is shown. The series follows this path, with each chapter being 4 episodes long. Right now the 2nd chapter just began.
So, I highly recommend the series to anyone who likes that kind of thing. It's not getting a whole lot of attention right now (darn you Haruhi!) so I'm trying to spread the word around about it.

Someone beating two people to death with a bat? The opening scene?
And I'm missing something here?
There are a couple of graphic novels my daughter reads that I don't understand what she sees in them. The level of violence and hate is so harsh.
Of course I've never really been able to follow them. But these disturb me. But that's me.

The bat beating thing is great because I love the dichotomy of the look of the show against the horror aspect. Episode 5's intro is even more graphic. And, it really shows that yes, this show is not for little kids, even though it looks like it. Otherwise, it would look like a kid's show. I mean, look at the first screenshot below. My first reaction to that would not be a show with mature horror themes (that's what the 2nd one is for).
Have you seen the opening scene to Full Metal Alchemist? Highly graphic scene, but it works oh so well, emphasizing what Equivalent Exchange is about and leads into many themes of the show. This is in a similar vein, assuming Higurashi no Naku Koro ni can keep up its quality.
Anyway, not trying to convert you. I like it, though.
Here is a link to the ANN info on the series (including episode 1's events). Here is the torrent list on animesuki. Animesuki also has a forum dedicated to Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. There's lots of discussions, explanations, and theorizing in there. You have to be careful though, and not read spoiler tags, because some people have played the games and know what will be in future episodes.

Description Some consider her to be the main villian of Chapter 1 (the first 4 episodes). She's so cute! Her seiyuu is Mai Nakahara who is becoming quite popular.
